The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
