England and Welsh Drawn Together for the 2027 World Cup in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was overseen by rugby icons including former All Black Dan Carter.

England together with Wales find themselves placed in the same group for the 2027 RWC, setting up a highly-anticipated early clash in Australia. Completing the group in Pool F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This draw echoes their memorable meeting in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at England's home ground played a part in the hosts' surprise group stage elimination.

Other Notable Pool Pairings

Ireland alongside the Scots have likewise been drawn in a pool once again, just as the scenario from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, Ireland secured a convincing win, with their opponents unable to progress to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, both made a strong impression as underdogs in France, round out that same group.

Significantly, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from defending champions and world number one South Africa before the showpiece match, presuming the South Africans win their own group.

Tournament Implications

If the pools play out in line with the current world rankings, other top favourites like the All Blacks and France would remain separated from the likes of England and the Irish until the championship decider.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the other top-ranked nation on the same side of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Hosts Face Blockbuster Opener

Hosts Australia find themselves alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Pool A.

The Wallabies will open the tournament in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee match designed to launch the event.

In other groups, reigning champions the Springboks have been paired with Italy, Georgia and the Oaks. The French team are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Los Pumas will face the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the tournament expands to 24 teams from the twenty who took part in 2023.

This edition will introduce a last-16 round for the first time in the competition's existence.

While the winner of Pool F may avoid some of the game's biggest beasts initially, they will have to face the second-placed team from Pool B – most likely the Italians – in the last 16.

A total of four of the other six pool winners will play a team that finished third from the pool stages.
